So welcome to analytics….

Analytic programming seems like a mysterious, and let’s be honest, a petrifying world of numbers and terms.  When you are self-teaching it is often very hard to get your head around how to get from A to B without going to C, Z, Y ……

So let’s start – Analytic programming can be easy when taken step by step, the world is pretty much your oyster in terms of what you can do, it’s just a matter of getting past the jargon (and there is a lot) by building stepping stones.

The first thing I’ll cover is what is analytic coding; well nowadays this covers a huge array of areas and pretty much anything can be data driven. If you go to Sainsbury’s (a UK supermarket) someone would have analysed what is on each shelf, how much and what each store should store and what offers will get the best return.  If you play a game on your phone, pretty much every aspect of the game would have been analysed and optimised to make sure you have the “right” experience and even down to the way a website is presented, some poor analysts could have had to analyse which colour & shaped is the best to drive engagement to the buy me button.

So there is a huge world of opportunities to use the numbers if you know where to start. In fact, the growth of data being recorded is growing in velocity and more data has been recorded in the past few years than in the history of data.

In my next post, I’ll talk about a couple of the languages available and how I use them to analyse data.
